Road Lessons/Day3

Our cabin in Custer State Park
Dave has finally found the weather channel!  The Weather Channel App has not been updating well on the IPhone in this area, so even though we are staying in a quaint little cabin in Custer State Park, we now have air conditioning, TV with cable access, and WIFI! =Happy Dave!!!
Separating a man and his access to the up to the minute weather is dicey!
We had a threat of rain today, but nothing that materialized. We heard something that might be thunder, but, in the end was just Harleys.........
Breakfast at the KOA left something to be desired, but  convenience carried the day and so we were on the road with little fuss: dew created some issues for packing up the tent etc. but synthetic fibers dry fast!
The model and the work in progress
A nice ride out of Rapid City, and soon we climbed into the cool, fragrant Black Hills. We opted NOT to stop at the visitor center at MT Rushmore and drove on, stopping at a few of the 'scenic views' and later at the Crazy Horse visitor center.  We were here in the early 1990's, and it has really changed, while the work on the Crazy Horse Monument, is the focal point, the nuts and bolts of the operation is the "Visitor Center,"   which was not  here last time we were here!  quite impressive...marketing is succeeding here!
By 2:00 pm Mountain Time, we were able to check in and just relax for awhile....
Custer, SD has these painted
Bison all over town
Tonight, we drove in to the town of Custer, had a drink at the Buglin' Bull, and wouldn't you know the guy next to us at the bar was from Minnesota.  His friend, the cop from Cold Spring, MN kept yelling at me that I was lying, that I didn't like my drink, he kept saying "She's Lying!".  It was VERY odd. AnyHoo.......
We had a nice dinner at Sage Creek Grille...our waitress, much to the chagrin of her ENTIRE family, is a Packers fan...we could have talked all night with her about that.....go figger...and I don't even like football. Our dinner was very tasty, though.
The most astounding thing that we have observed in regards to this Sturgis phenomenon, is that it is an OLDer crowd!!!! YES!  I mean OLD!  The majority of the people we have seen  en route to Sturgis, ensconced in Harley paraphernalia, are OVER 40!!! NOONE is young!  Yes, that includes us!  What's that all about?  I have never seen so many baby boomers and their elders in one place...and all trying to look cool in their matching Harley Davidson gear.

Quote of the day:  I will quote myself...in regards to this crazy motorcycle trip I said 'Daveland is better than Disneyland!"

Lesson #9:  it is good to be able to say...i just want to chill

  1. Riding in the hills is perfect! Smooth roads and twisty. You have to pick your line thru the corner, as we are a little loaded (thats heavy loaded not loaded loaded like sturgis). I have to say that being able to ride each day and see the beautiful wide open spaces really helps your small spirit reconnect and become large again.
