Downtown Dubois Butch Cassidy shopped here at Welty's |
but it wasn't as cold as it was up in the pass, where they had...hold on..SNOW! We packed up the bike, had some breakfast in town, and headed towards Jackson. There was some road construction about 20 miles up the road which we had been warned about. They brought the motorcycles to the front of the line where we were told of the conditions we would encounter over the next 4 or 5 miles, while we waited for the pilot vehicle that would lead us through. It was pretty rough and slow going but we made it. Fortunately, the muddy conditions that existed earlier in the morning from the melting snow, were cleared up by the time we got there and aside from the slow pace we got through without incident, whew! The ride was beautiful and soon we were descending into the valley with some of our first views of the Tetons in front of us.
We headed into Jackson and the first thing on David's agenda was to find the New York City Sub Shop where he had eaten about 10 years ago when in town on business and has been raving about ever since. We had our sandwiches and then called our friend Kay, who lives here in Jackson with her husband Paul. Kay is an old art fair friend of David's, and we haven't seen them for many years. We are so happy to able to stop and stay with them on this trip. She gave us directions to the house, and we rode over and after our happy reunion, she gave us a tour of the house, introduced us to the dog, Seneca, and had to rush off to her job at a local gallery where they were having an opening this evening. So! We were pretty happy that the day had progressed without mishap, when, just minutes after Kay had left we realized that the elderly, hard of hearing, Seneca, had wandered outside when we opened the garage door to unload the bike. We were just dumbstruck and worried...how had we let the dog out? We're thinking: Great. We just get here to visit friends we haven't seen in ages, and we promptly lose their dog! So we went different directions searching the neighborhood, which is gorgeous but surrounded with lush tall grasses, impossible to see a small dog in! Terrified she'd be bear food, or get hit by a car...We finally sucked up the nerve to call Kay, and she said not to worry, she does it all the time, she likes to go next door to see the neighbor...sure enough, that is what she did. What a relief! Senny is notorious for her disappearing act!
She's an awfully sweet dog, though, and we were very happy to see her when the neighbor brought her home!
Paul and his nephew, Luke, had been fishing, came home, cleaned up and we all went into town to see the art show at the gallery and went to dinner at Giovanni's, for Italian food and lots of catching up on what's been going on for the last 15 years or so!
We all needed an early night, so we crawled off to bed.
We were happy to see our friends, and catch up and have a beautiful place to stay for a couple of days. We look forward to some exploration of Grand Teton Park tomorrow, and who knows what else.
The funny thing we noticed when we first came to town, was a poster for the Bob Dylan concert tonight. Seems like we have been chasing Bob across the country. He was at Sturgis when we were there, in Casper the night we stayed there, and now Jackson! I wonder if he'll be playing in Idaho next week?

Quote for the day: for you Dumb and Dumber fans: when we got off the bike to take the above photo
I said to David "A little nippy coming through the pass."
Lesson #21: It is important to rekindle old friendships! Thanks Paul and Kay!
